Female ripped off out of $19,000 for driveway repairs she assumed would value $50
May 12, 2022WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Donnie Eames suggests a man who identified as himself David Swartz walked up to her door on April 27th and available to fill in some cracks on her driveway.
“He was telling me how gorgeous my garden was, how shabby my driveway appeared, but he could correct that,” Eames defined.
All it would price tag was $50, according to Swartz.
“So, about 30 minutes later on, maybe 45 minutes, he rang my doorbell, and he was done, and he was seeking to come in the residence so he could compose me a warranty. So, he arrived in and sat at my dining space table. He was about there producing some thing, and I really do not see also nicely, I have to glance for a magnifying glass, so I didn’t definitely know what he wrote, but anyhow he explained he needed two checks I mentioned ‘two for $50?’ he claims ‘it’s $19,000′,″ Eames explained.
Eames wrote two checks for $9,500 every to another person named Luke Stanley.
Days later on, Swartz came again to touch up his function and he charged Eames a different $9,500.
“I mentioned ‘you’re kidding.’ I explained ‘you informed me that it was going to be $50,’ he suggests ‘$50 a gallon.’ I mentioned you did not point out a gallon,” Eames stated.
Right after she wrote the third look at she identified as her son who immediately recognized the man–Tommy Clack. Clack has been charged with pulling related scams in other areas of the condition.
Eames’ lender encouraged her to close the account before Clack cashed that 3rd test.

New Hanover Sheriff’s investigators arrested Clack in his hometown of Sanford, North Carolina on Tuesday, but he acquired out of jail on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Eames states she hopes by sharing her story she can save other people from slipping for the ‘too excellent to be true’ deal.
“It keeps me awake thinking about it . . . I indicate, I should’ve caught on when he claimed that figure in the beginning. I should not have penned any checks, I should’ve advised him I did not have that sort of money.”
